What kind of recording scene do people imagine when they listen to this Album ?

Sunlight pouring in, a seaside cottage-style studio, drinking rum, the leader calling out, “Let’s do one good take while the groove is on us,” everyone happily and amiably… No way. Absolutely not.

I, who was present at the recording, came away with my nerves utterly worn out.

Watching the video now, anyone who didn’t know would surely think it was torture.

It’s completely different from what jazz calls “ad lib.” Improvisation — or what classical music calls _cadenza_ — no, perhaps it fits best to use the stiff Japanese word “soku-kyō ensō” (improvised performance).

Cuba’s representative players (which means almost the world’s representative players) — trumpeter Juan Munguía (of Irakere), _tres_ guitarist Pancho Amat (of Adalberto Álvarez’s group), alto and soprano saxophonist Hermán Velasco (of Pablo Milanés’s group) and others — would do twenty, thirty takes for a single solo of merely twelve bars.

“Good solo, but in two places you went off the back rhythm.”

“If you’re going with that concept, the _sol_ and _re_ notes you played a moment ago are strange.”

What I had thought was an amazing solo, the music director José Luis Cortés would mercilessly discard. But it was because he trusted the players.

There has never been jazz like this anywhere.

Xiomara Laugart, before the recording, was unusually frightened.

“Can I really sing this?”

I said:

“I have listened to Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Merrill, Chris Connor, and Carmen McRae. Your voice and your power of expression do not lose to any of theirs.”

I kept saying so.

During the recording I didn’t notice, but Xiomara’s voice and way of singing carry something extremely serious and earnest. Put in the worst light, you could say it lacks playfulness — but to Cubans, music is fundamentally not a kind of play.

Well, I’ve touched on Cuba in many essays and interviews already, so with this CD, please simply enjoy, without reasoning it out, a certain sense of speed and an exhilarating stimulation.

What I’d especially recommend: in “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise,” Xiomara’s middle-low register — soft, smooth, and yet with a noble, languid vocal. In “Fly Me to the Moon,” the _tres_ solo by Pancho Amat — the _tres_ is an instrument used mainly in traditional _son_, and even Cubans at first did not believe it could play jazz.

In “Golden Earrings,” Dagoberto’s violin solo, and Xiomara’s voice laden with grief. In “Autumn Leaves,” José Luis Cortés’s unbelievable flute, Feliciano Arango’s bass solo with syncopation fully in effect, and on top of that Emilio Morales’s piano solo evoking Bud Powell. And then, the overwhelming brass riff of “Cheek to Cheek”!

There is nothing left to say.

Please, just listen.
I feel, from the bottom of my heart, proud to have produced this music.

## 1\. SOFTLY, AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE

written by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II

**(SUAVE, COMO UNA LUZ DE AURORA)**

SUAVE COMO UNA DE AURORA
ASÍ ME VA ENVOLVIENDO CADA DÍA TU AMOR
LENTO COMO EL SOL DE LAS PLAYAS
ASÍ QUEMAN LOS BESOS DE TU ARDIENTE PASIÓN
MAS TU AMOR SE PARECE A UNA BRISA INCONSTANTE
A ESAS INQUIETAS OLAS QUE VIENEN Y SE VAN Y OTRAS VECES SIENTO
TU AMOR COMO UN INFIERNO Y POR MOMENTOS TIERNO
YA NO SÉ QUÉ PENSAR

## 2\. FLY ME TO THE MOON

written by Bart Howard

**(LLÉVAME A LA LUNA)**

YO LLEGUÉ A PENSAR SI EXISTE EL SOL Y EXISTE EL MAR
LOS CREASTE TÚ TAL VEZ CON SOLO SUSPIRAR
QUIERO DECIR QUE SIN TI NO PUDO HABER EXISTENCIA

Y LLEGUÉ A PENSAR SI EXISTE EL SOL Y EXISTE EL MAR
LOS CREASTE TÚ TAL VEZ CON SOLO SUSPIRAR
QUIERO DECIR QUE SIN TI NO PUDO HABER NI CANCIÓN

## 3\. GOLDEN EARRINGS

written by Victor Young, Ray Evans, and Jay Livingston

**(ARETES DORADOS)**

VENTA EN TUS CARTAS LA GITANA
HISTORIAS DE UN AMOR
Y ARETES DE PASIÓN DORADOS COMO LUZ DE SOL

CANTA ARMONIOSA LA GUITARRA LA HISTORIA QUE APRENDÍ
DE ARETES QUE TE TRAE AMORES Y TE HACEN FELIZ

VEN QUE EN EL MISTERIO MÍSTICO DE TU ESPLENDOR Y
A SE ENCIENDE EL FUEGO MÁGICO DE MI PASIÓN
VOY A LA LUZ DE LAS ESTRELLAS TU VOZ SERÁ MI VOZ
Y HABRÁ UNA HISTORIA AÚN MÁS BELLA
CUANDO SALGA EL SOL

## 4\. AUTUMN LEAVES

written by Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prévert

**(HOJAS MUERTAS)**

SE PONE EL SOL VA MURIENDO LA TARDE
TODO SE TORNA MÁS TRISTE MÁS GRIS
SOLO SE QUEDA LA PENA DEL ALMA
SÓLO UN PEDAZO DE AQUELLO QUE FUI

SALGO A CAMINAR TRATARE DE OLVIDAR
NO PUEDO SEGUIR ASÍ
SERÁ COMO LAS HOJAS MUERTAS
QUE VAN A VERME EN MI DOLOR

EN MI BALCÓN LAS HOJAS CAEN
LAS TRAE EL VIENTO LUEGO SE VAN
MIS LABIOS BUSCAN UN BELLO AMOR
MI CUERPO EXTRAÑA TU CALOR
DESDE QUE SE FUE EL TIEMPO PARÓ
EL INVIERNO GRIS LLEGÓ
SU RECUERDO AL IGUAL QUE HOJAS MUERTAS
AMIGAS DE MI DOLOR

EN MI BALCÓN LAS HOJAS CAEN
LAS TRAE EL VIENTO LUEGO SE VAN
MIS LABIOS BUSCAN UN BELLO AMOR
MI CUERPO EXTRAÑA YA TU CALOR

## 5\. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT LOVE IS

written by Don Raye  and Gene de Paul

**(TÚ NO SABES LO QUE ES EL AMOR)**

NO SABES QUERIDO
LO TRISTE QUE SE SIENTE EN EL AMOR
LO SENTIRÁS SI PIERDES UN AMOR
NO SABES NO SABES NO SABES QUERIDO
LO TRISTE QUE SE SIENTE EN EL AMOR
CUANDO EL AMOR SE ALEJA YA DE TI
NO SABES NO SABES

TÚ NO LO COMPRENDES PORQUE NO LO HAS VIVIDO
YA LO SABRÃS UN DIA DE UN AMOR SIN BESOS(NO)
NO SABES QUERIDO
LO TRISTE QUE SE SIENTE EN EL AMOR
CUANDO EL AMOR SE ALEJA YA DE TI
NO SABES NO SABES

## 6\. MY FUNNY VALENTINE

written by Lorentz Hart and Richard Rodgers

**(MI GRACIOSO AMOR)**

MI TIERNO Y DULCE AMOR GRACIOSO HERMOSO AMOR
CONTIGO SOY TAN FELIZ
QUE NO QUIERO PENSAR
QUE PUEDA FRACASAR
ESTE ROMANCE TAN FELIZ
YO NO PUEDO CONCEBIR MI EXISTENCIA YA SIN TI
SIN LA DICHA DE TENER TU CALOR

MI TIERNO Y DULCE AMOR GRACIOSO Y DULCE AMOR
DÉJATE AMAR POR MÍ SÍ
MI GIGANTESCO AMOR VEN

## 8\. DREAM

written by Johnny Mercer

**(SUEÑA)**

SUEÑA CUANDO TRISTE ESTÉS
SUENA ESO ES LO MEJOR
DEJA EL SUEÑO LIBRE VOLAR
COMO ESPIRAL QUE BUSCA EL AZUL,!OH!

SUEÑA SUEÑA TÚ TAMBIÉN
SUEÑA BUSCANDO EL AZUL
SUEÑA PON TU ALMA EN UN SUEÑO AZUL
SUEÑA, SUEÑA

SUEÑA CUANDO TRISTE ESTÉS
SUEÑA ES LO QUE HAY QUE HACER
VER, DEL CIGARRO EL HUMO VOLAR
HALLAR LA ILUSION PODER RECORDAR

SUEÑA, QUE EN TU INTIMIDAD
TODO SE HACE REALIDAD
PIENSA QUE NO TODO ES MALO EN VERDAD
POR ESO SUEÑA, SUEÑA, SUEÑA

## 9\. CHEEK TO CHEEK

written by Irving Berlin

**(MEJILLA CON MEJILLA)**

ERES TAN HERMOSO PRIMOROSO TAN GRACIOSO Y JUVENIL
QUE ME SIENTO TAN DICHOSA Y TAN FELIZ
CUANDO BAILO CON TU CUERPO JUNTO A MÍ

ERES TAN HERMOSO PRIMOROSO TAN GRACIOSO Y JUVENIL
QUE NO QUIERO SEPARARME YA DE TI
CUANDO BAILO CON TU CARA JUNTO A MÍ

YO NO QUIERO QUE ME MIREN CUANDO BAILO JUNTO A TI
PORQUE TEMO QUE DESCUBRAN QUE YO ESTOY LOCA POR TI
CUANDO YO BAILO CONTIGO SE ACELERA TODO EN MÍ
Y NO QUIERO QUE ME MIREN CUANDO BAILO JUNTO A TI
BÉSAME SIGUE BAILANDO ASÍ
YO QUIERO QUE TU COMPRENDAS MI AMOR

(PORQUE) ERES TAN HERMOSO PRIMOROSO TAN GRACIOSO Y JUVENIL
QUE ME SIENTO MUY DICHOSA Y MUY FELIZ
CUANDO BAILO CON TU CUERPO JUNTO A MÍ
